He studied musicology with Reinhold Hammerstein and Wilhelm Seidel at Heidelberg University and took the doctorate in 1974 with a dissertation on Cavalli and the diffusion of Venetian opera in Italy in the 17th century. In 1969-70 he worked for RISM (series A/I) in Italy and returned there permanently in 1973. In 1977 he was visiting professor at the department of music, Princeton University, and became professor of Drammaturgia musicale at the Università degli studi, Bologna.)
